Boarding the craft for the rapid service |
Hovertravel's newly converted hovercraft 'Freedom
90' has returned to the Isle of Wight from Scotland following the provision
of a scheduled service from St. Andrews to Carnoustie, the venue for the 1999
British Open Golf Championship.
The 500+ nautical mile journey to St. Andrews was completed in just 12.5 hours
at speed plus 2 refuelling stops - an average speed of over 40 knots.
Almost 5,000 passengers were carried on the 11-mile route and with an average
crossing time of just 20 minutes passengers enjoyed a time saving of around one
hour as compared to the journey by road.
The route was ideally suited to hovercraft there are no port facilities at
Carnoustie and only a tidal facility at St Andrews, which ruled out the use of a
high-speed boat. The combination of high craft speed and an amphibious
capability produced the quick crossing times and the facility to land passengers
on the beach within 100 m of the first tee.
The hovercraft was featured on television from time to time throughout the
Championship and also received extensive local and national press coverage.
